Has anyone seen the latest headlines? The US government just approved horsemeat to be sold to consumers in the United States. Your local grocer in the United States will soon be selling packaged horse meat. :shock: I'm speechless!
Are there any more thoughts on the matter?

One of the many reasons that horses are so nervous is that for as long as there have been hunters, either four footed or two footed , horses have been fast food. Horses, like cows, are just so useful to people other than as food that eating them is generally not considered. But of the thousands of horses that are bred for racing only a few are good enough to earn their keep and they are very expensive pets.

Just because some people classify horses as pets doesnt mean everyone does. All the ruling means is that if someone wants to slaughter horses in the US that the inspectors will be available. Personally, I would like to try horse.

When I was a kid we were able to buy frozen horse meat for our dogs. That was about 67 years ago if memory serves me well. In those days horses were work animals and horse hide was used for industrial belting.
Horses were used up just like cars and trucks are today and it wasn't profitable to keep them. They were expected to earn their keep.

I remember reading that in countries that serve horse meat that the draft horse is preferred. More meat per animal.

One day I asked Ed the butcher what he did for a living before he had a butcher shop. He said that he was in the freight hauling business with a wagon and a team. I asked him why the change and he said one of his horses died.

Great (all beef) Meat Pies in Brisbane and not a horsey bid in them.
If you ever come here for a holiday we certainly have to hook up for some smoked sausage tastings and a few schooners.

What's wrong with horse meat? As a young kid, I ate plenty of it and didn't know I was eating "Mr. Ed". I found it quite tasty. I once had a canine that loved horse meat sold by Alpo. I hate to admit it, but I ate some and it was quite good. Hopefully it wasn't one of Chuckwagon's mares that I found so yummy.

Yes, as a kid I have eaten horse meat as well. In Holland there were specialist butchers that sold only horse meat.
We used to buy cured, smoked and dried horse meat, sliced paper thin for sandwiches as well as horse fillet and rump.
We all liked it, matter of fact when I was young, I ate a Bavarian style summer sausage made from Donkey, according to my girlfriends mother. Real garlicky and very nice too.
In Australia, I have eaten kangaroo, wallaby, crocodile, buffalo and camel, just as nice.

We all know that Chicken nowadays tastes like manufactured meat, crap I mean, the best way to eat chicken now for me is this cured and smoked 7UP chicken that Sawhorseray does so well.

Out here along the river we have 105 pound mosquitoes! We don't shoot 'em because it just makes them mad. :mrgreen: Our deer often weigh thousands of pounds and I've learned how to bag them without any harm to the meat whatsoever. I just wait until one of those big boys comes along with a couple of dozen points on his noggin, then I quickly step out from behind a tree on the trail... right in front of one. Just the sight of my homely, weatherbeaten, one-of-a-kind, double-ugly, face usually just scares 'em to death! Yes, yes, with sudden heart failure, they often just drop in their tracks! We often mount the tusks of the larger ones over the fireplaces in the west.

I used to rope the deer out here but they started getting so big that I had to start using chain lassos instead of regular rope. Now, I'm gettin' along in years and throwin' a chain lasso is not the easiest chore on the ranch anymore. So, I went back to "face" huntin'.

In the high country, we have the infamous Rocky Mountain "Snowshoe" deer. It's quite a sight - a full-grown buck wearin' snowshoes. One on each hoof! And they don't even slow the critters down. In fact, with all that traction, it just speeds 'em up! :roll:

Given the high beef prices these days (and they'll be going higher because of the continuing drought), it doesn't surprise me. There was a time, back in the early 1970's (back when the earth was crusting over) when a similar market situation arose and horse meat was available in supermarkets, at least where we lived (Colorado). But then Spiro Agnew resigned, Nixon resigned, and the world straightened up by itself.
